Revolutionize Your Job Hunt: Latest Application Trends

As a recruiter and hearing the woes of job searching from many candidates through the years, I have seen a few themes when candidates are actively in a search for a new role.

The main theme is the ease of applying to a role on a company’s website. First, when a candidate goes to a website, it should be clear where the Careers or Opportunities section is on your website: A quick tab on the top, under the About Us tab, at the bottom of the main landing page are all examples of great places for this to be accessible. Once they click on the Careers tab, there should be either a list of open roles, or the option to filter through locations/departments, etc.

From a systems standpoint, this is where recruitment can partner with their systems administrators to ensure that job descriptions, job titles and screening questions are in place to properly assess these candidates coming in. It is important to make sure that you are always reviewing and optimizing your Jobs Listing pages to keep up with market trends. It is also important to ensure that the systems you have in place are properly advertising your jobs to cover the requirements by law, such as the equal pay act.

When a candidate finds a role they would like to apply to, the next steps should require a simple information grab and an option to upload a resume. A lot of companies I am seeing have the ability to simply upload your resume document and it will grab the information on it’s own. Some require a simple form of information to enter, but this should be just that – simple. In most cases Name, Email, Phone number should be sufficient in addition to an uploaded resume. In other cases, you may need to rely on a vendor for an assessment or additional screening before your recruiters even see their profiles. In a professional setting – there is no need to know your GPA from high school or college, especially if this is a senior level role. Having an ATS in place that allows you to customize your candidate experience may be best if you are hiring for multiple types of positions.

Once a candidate successfully submits their resume and information through a portal, they should be contacted within forty-eight hours. Whether you think this candidate is a fit for the role or not, please contact them to set up a time to speak. A conversation with a candidate is always valuable even if the resume may not be 100% what you are looking for in that role. When using an ATS or an automated action to disposition your candidates, please make sure that the message is as human as possible.

These few simple items have been reoccurring themes throughout my years as a recruiter, and the more accessible your career page is – the more traffic and quality of candidates you will receive.
